These are, by far, the 5 easiest ways to optimize your Klaviyo account AND reduce your monthly Klaviyo bill! I implement these FIRST with new clients.

Reduce your Klaviyo bill in 30 seconds!

Klaviyo bills by your total Active Profile count. Most businesses have “Active Profiles” that aren’t actually active.

So just create a segment using AI and suppress that segment. You are not billed for suppressed contacts, and you can undo this at any time in the future.

  • Click on “Lists and Segments”
  • Click on “Create New Segment”
  • Name this segment “Suppression Segment”

Type this into the AI field and Klaviyo will build the segment for you: “Create a segment of contacts who have received at least 6 email over all time, have opened zero emails over all time, and have not subscribed in the past 90 days.”

Then go back to lists and segments, click on the 3 dots to the right of the new “Suppression Segment,” click “Suppress,” and then go to accounts and billing by clicking on your business name in the bottom left, and reduce your Klaviyo monthly bill to match your new Active Profile number. That’s it! Your bill should now be significantly lower.

AI Predictive Next Order Flow

This is, hands-down, the most valuable and exciting feature Klaviyo has released to date! This flow predicts when your customer is most likely to place their next order.

I was blown away at how well this flow performed from the get-go, and this is why: it does not just use your Klaviyo account’s data. It uses BIG machine learning data, pulling hundreds of millions of data points from ALL Klaviyo accounts, ALL Shopify online stores, and several other large partners!

Many companies have release nonsense AI products just to say they did. This is one of the first legitimate AI tools I have seen!

And it takes just a few minutes to set up:

  1. On the left, click “Flows”
  2. Click “Create Flow”
  3. Click “Build Your Own”
  4. Name the Flow: “AI Predictive Next Order Flow”
  5. Click “Create Manually”
  6. Under “Select a trigger,” click ”All Triggers”
  7. Click “Date Property”
  8. Click “Expected Date of Next Order”
  9. Click “Before the date property value” and enter 2 days. For “Select a time of day,” choose 9 am, recipient’s local time zone.
  10. Click “Monthly” for “When should this flow repeat?”
  11. Click “Next” and then “Save” and then “Confirm and Save”
  12. Drag over an email box from the left and place below the 2nd of the 2 blocks that were already there (bottom of the flow chart)
  13. Here, all you need to do is add a recent campaign email that performed well. Through testing across dozens of clients, we have found that using a “benefits” style email works better than an “are you ready to order” style email.

That’s it! We are seeing this simple, 1-email flow outperform every flow by a long shot except the Welcome Flows and Abandoned Cart Flows. It is even outperforming the Browse Abandonment Flows!

Segmenting to maximize both Revenue and Deliverability:

Most businesses overcomplicate this and end up missing half of their list! I had a client who was segmenting like crazy and was missing 70% of their list! In the first 30 days, we did $4.7 million in additional revenue from email, literally quadrupling their monthly revenue!!

Here is a very simple segmenting solution that I use with ALL of my clients, regardless of their industry:

(HINT: Remember that you can use the AI feature to build these segments. Just copy and paste the words below to build it!)

  1. Create a 30 Day Openers/Active Segment of people who have opened email at least once in the past 30 days, OR, have been active on the site in the past 30 days.
  2. Create an Exclusion Segment. This will be anyone who has bounced, marked email a spam, or unsubscribed over all time. Always exclude this segment without exception. When adding the audience for the email, right below the spot where you add lists and segments, there is a spot to exclude lists and segments.
  3. Create an ALL CONTACTS Segment of people who can receive email

Now, send to ALL CONTACTS, while EXCLUDING the Exclusion Segment. Do this once every 2 months.

And for every other send, which should be 1-2 per week, send to the 30 Day Openers/Active segment, and of course exclude the Exclusion Segment.

This is so foolproof that it almost guarantees that you will maintain maximum deliverability and list health! And, most importantly, it will generate the best possible ROI from your list. I can go into all sorts of detail as to why excessive segmenting is bad and this system is best, but please just trust me here. I do explain this in greater detail in a couple YouTube videos.

Oops! I Made a Mistake!

Amazingly, after 18+ years of email marketing, this is the subject line with the all-time best open rate EVER, and by a long shot! We regularly see an unbelievable 70-80% on a list that would normally get 45%.

I stumbled on this after making a legitimate mistake and forgetting to include a coupon code in an email.

This is super awesome, because instead of worrying or panicking about making a mistake in your emails, on the rare occasion it does happen, just use the subject line, and you'll get double the sales you would have otherwise!

Just make sure that the main point of your email matches the subject line. You can also use this for a sale that you “forgot” to tell your customers about.

Turn OFF Smart Sending:

This is probably the only Klaviyo feature that I do NOT like. when on, it literally STOPS important emails, like Abandoned Cart Flow emails or Welcome Flow emails, from going out. And these are some of the most important emails in your entire account! The standard setting is 16 hours, which means the email will NOT go to someone who just received an email within the past 16 hours.

So imagine someone comes to your site, adds to cart, leaves, and then does NOT get the campaign sale email you scheduled to go out the next morning!

I cannot tell you how many business and agencies have “Smart Sending” turned on for most or all of their campaign and flow emails.

Make sure this is turned OFF for all campaign emails and flow emails.
